Years of writing about baseball in Anniston, Alabama, made me believe there was little I didn’t know about the sport and this sliver of northeast Alabama. All-knowing, perhaps.
I was wrong.
I knew the St. Louis Cardinals had played an exhibition here, that Casey Stengel had brought his minor-league team to Anniston in 1930, that the then-Triple A Baltimore Orioles had played here, and all that jazz about Ty Cobb back in the day. But I didn’t know that the Philadelphia Phillies played here in the spring of 1911.
Who knew? Consider me finally enlightened.
